Things that pre-date dual-clutch gearboxes, like Porsche’s Sportomatic, Citroen’s flirtation with BVH/C-Matic, etc. I know there are others out there, I just don’t know what they are. Maybe we can start one?

I believe Sportomatic was heavily based on Volkswagen’s Automatic Stick Shift from the same period.
There was also Saxomat, from Fichtel & Sachs, which a number of West German cars used in the ‘50s and ‘60s.

Honda’s automatic transmissions are automated manual transmissions. Internally, they’re like a manual transmission with some kind of servo shit to shift automatically.
Chrysler’s Fluid Drive from the 40s.

Kind of bass-ackwards though, it’s a clutched automatic.

Fiat Citymatic
Ferrari Mondial
Renault something or other (the internet has forgotten about it, it was a contemporary of the Saab and Fiat)
Mercedes ACS (used on the first A class)

Subaru had the Auto Clutch Subaru 360, which had a system similar to the Saxomat. I think Mazda also used a similar system on the R360 but I’ll have to look into it.

Not sure if it entirely counts (it still uses a third pedal), but the pre-selector gearboxes used by many luxury marques from the ‘30s to the ‘50s are absolutely fascinating: there were all manner of different implementations, but the basic idea was that you could select a gear ahead of time, and then engage it by pressing and releasing the pedal. With manual transmissions of the time often being decidedly unforgiving, having the gear engagement automated away like that must have been revolutionary.

That is new to me!

That’s true. There was an SMG-I in use in E36s in Europe (I’ve seen in a few ads.)

Awesome list — I though the Mondial used a GM Automatic, though?

Cotal electromagnetic. Manual clutch for starting but electrically operated clutchless changes. Separate reverse mechanism so four gears forward and four more backwards. Used mainly in upmarket French cars in the 1930s and 1950s.
